‘Ballsed up’: Champ’s crash at Bathurst

Three-time Supercars champion Scott McLaughlin has lost control and crashed into the fencing during the final practice run at Bathurst.

Ahead of Friday afternoon’s qualifying session, McLaughlin was comfortably leading Practice 5, recording a fastest lap of 2:04.3716.

With the hope of improving his time, the Shell V-Power Racing driver soared through the first sector before making an error ahead of Forrest’s Elbow.

McLaughlin locked his rears and his car made contact with the fence at high-speed before spinning, sustaining some left-rear suspension damage in the process.

Despite the incident, the New Zealander still finished the session with the fastest lap, narrowly trumping newly-signed Walkinshaw Andretti United rookie Bryce Fullwood.

“I just ballsed up the downshift, that was all it was,” McLaughlin said.

“We’re using the engine braking so much that as soon as you miss one you’re out of the groove.

“That’s all I did. I tried to half recover it, but as soon as it plucked the bottom arm out (on the wall) I was a bit of a passenger.

“But I think we’ll be right. The car is super racey; it felt mega. I was six tenths up going into that part of the track.”

Red Bull Holden Racing rival Jamie Whincup finished the session in fifth with a time of 2:04.6280.

Meanwhile, Garry Jacobson missed a large portion of the session after an engine failure in his #35 Matt Stone Racing Commodore.

“We had an oil leak yesterday we were monitoring … we thought we were managing it right and then it just got too much,” Jacobson said.

“We’ll go back to our spare engine. I’m grateful we have so much practice [on Saturday] after qualifying today.”

Qualifying is scheduled to commence on Friday afternoon at 4:05pm AEDT.

Concerns about wild weather in Bathurst this weekend prompted organisers to bring the start time of Sunday’s race forward by 30 minutes.

The biggest day on the Supercars calendar will now start on Sunday at 11am AEDT as opposed to 11.30am, with rain and storms forecast during the iconic 161-lap race.
