JT Daniels injury update: Georgia starts Stetson Bennett against Arkansas

No. 2 Georgia will be without its starting quarterback heading into a crucial matchup against No. 8 Arkansas.

J.T. Daniels has been dealing with a Grade 1 lat strain that will keep him out of a crucial game, with Stetson Bennett slated to get the start in the top-10 matchup on Saturday, according to The Athletic.

This will be Bennett’s second start of the season.

Daniels also missed the team’s matchup against UAB due to an oblique injury, and Bennett returned to the starting role for the first time since 2020.

Bennett completed 10-of-12 passes for 288 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions, while rushing once for 20 yards against UAB. Georgia routed the Blazers 56-7. Bennett had three pass attempts against South Carolina and returned for extended action against Vanderbilt, where he made 11-of-15 passes for 151 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also rushed five times for 37 yards.

Bennett has some familiarity against Arkansas, as his first start of 2020 came against the Razorbacks. D’Wan Mathis began the 2020 season as the starter, but was replaced by Bennett, who started his first game against Arkansas. In that Sept. 26 matchup, Bennett went 20-for-29 with two touchdowns and 211 passing yards with 20 rushing yards on five carries.

He went through the first three starts before he had an interception, but struggled against Alabama as he threw three picks and completed only 45 percent of his passes. He threw three interceptions over his next two games to just one touchdown pass and was replaced by Daniels, who had transferred from USC.

Daniels was strong the rest of the 2020 season as he had 10 touchdown passes and only two picks, while he completed 67.2 percent of his passes and racked up 1,231 passing yards.

When Daniels has been on the field in 2021, he’s been accurate and efficient. He has completed 76.1 percent of his passes this season with 567 passing yards, five passing touchdowns and only two interceptions.
