Comedian Dave Hughes blows up over ‘crazy’ AFL covid confusion

Australian comedian Dave Hughes says he is confused by the decision to allow AFL players to fly to Queensland amid Melbourne’s growing Covid-19 outbreak.

Earlier this week, the AFL season was thrown into chaos and several AFL clubs fled Melbourne for the Sunshine state as the city entered a fifth hard lockdown.

On Saturday it was confirmed at least one player or staff member from Essendon, North Melbourne and Sydney were isolating in hard lockdown after visiting ‘tier one’ sites in Victoria before they left the state.

But in a huge relief for the AFL, players and staff members from eight clubs who attended exposure sites in Victoria in recent days had tested negative to Covid-19.

Hughes took to social media to vent his frustration at the fact AFL clubs who had been exposed to the virus in Melbourne had been flown into another state, putting that community at risk.

Bizarre how loose @afl are allowed to be compared to regular citizens. Jumping on planes flying all over the country. Why does everyone else have to go through 2 week quarantine??? https://t.co/nk1W7ETIom

“Why were the Swans put on a plane and flown to Queensland from Melbourne after the Melb outbreak was in swing?” he wrote on Twitter.

“This is bats**t crazy.”

Why did @afl fly clubs out of Melbourne to play interstate after the Melb outbreak had well and truly started? Why did QLD let this happen? https://t.co/2r0tH33zye

“Flying all those teams out of Melbourne to play games rather than having them play in Melb, when it was already obvious that players/staff would have been exposed is unbelievable,” Hughes added.

The 50-year-old was unimpressed with the sight of a Western Bulldogs player interacting to the crowd after their game against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.

“I know I’m harping, but just watching Western Bulldog player interacting with crowd at Gold Coast game,” Hughes said.

“I don’t get it. Is the border shut or not? Are there no protocols for freshly arrived Victorians in QLD? Genuinely confused? @AFL”

Hughes clearly disagreed with the decision to relocated AFL clubs from Melbourne from Queensland for the foreseeable future, despite not knowing if players and staff had been at exposure sites.

This just announced yet scores of @afl players/staff were ordered to fly from Melb to QLD on Thursday and now interacting with QLD public? Meanwhile 12 million Aussies locked down. https://t.co/Rme8JteLy4

We’ve got no idea if the players on the field were at the Melb city pub on Monday morning watching the Euro final that’s just been announced as tier 1 exposure site for one example. These games could have all been played in Melb. QLD govt obviously don’t care. Bizarre. https://t.co/vZrteDtCzQ

Hughes was asked by his followers, including former Port Adelaide player-turned-pundit Kane Cornes, if he’d rather the AFL season not go ahead.

“Are you also upset with the Olympians going, Cricketers going to West Indies, tennis players going to Wimbledon?” Cornes asked Hughes.

“Kane they are going to Covid hot spots and if they infect people there those countries won’t be shut,” Hughes fired back.

“You’re better than this as an argument!”

All games could have been played in Melbourne. Flying players from locked down Melb to zero Covid areas is madness. QLD/WA/SA risking their current zero Covid utopias for this is insanity. https://t.co/cqLX3ksKqt

No I don’t. But I understand all teams were in Melb. Could have stayed there and kept playing in a hub. Flying them around nation after Melb outbreak had got going seems ridiculous. https://t.co/RGbSi7Dl60
