Baker Mayfield hasn’t spoken with Odell Beckham Jr. since the wide receiver’s father posted a video detailing all the times Mayfield failed to target his son this season.
The 26-year-old Browns quarterback after practice on Wednesday answered several questions regarding Beckham Jr. Although he hasn’t connected with the receiver since the video was posted early Tuesday, Mayfield believes a conversation with him “can go a long way.”
Mayfield added he was surprised after Beckham Sr. posted the video, and that concentrating on the situation is distracting the organization from focusing on winning.
The video in question featured an 11-minute-long compilation of Mayfield missing throws to a wide-open Beckham Jr. The receiver’s father posted it two days after he caught one pass on one target for 6 yards in a 15-10 loss to Pittsburgh. When Mayfield was asked if he wants the receiver back, he responded, “I’d take anything to have a winning team right now.” The quarterback believes they can work through their differences if Beckham does end up staying in Cleveland.
Mayfield told reporters he had also spoken to receiver Jarvis Landry about the situation. While they both wanted success for Beckham Jr., they agreed they both wanted to focus on winning.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Beckham Jr. missed practice on Wednesday. Following media availability, he said the Cleveland organization excused him because he felt “it was the right thing to do.”
Rumors are circulating the Browns may release the wide receiver, but he is still listed as active on the Browns’ roster. Podcaster Jordan Schultz also reported the Saints and Raiders are among teams interested in acquiring the wide receiver if he does end up on waivers.
Although Beckham Jr.’s future in Cleveland is currently unclear, he’s slated to start for the Browns’ matchup on Sunday against the Bengals.
