Open champion Cameron Smith insists that he plans on drinking the Claret Jug 20 times over after capturing golf’s oldest and most cherished trophy with an extraordinary finish at St Andrews.
It is a first major for the Australian, who carded a magnificent bogey-free eight-under-par 64, that featured five successive birdies from the 10th, to win on 20 under par.
The 28-year-old had to roll in a three-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to avoid a play-off with American Cameron Young, who had seconds earlier eagled the par-four hole to post a 65 and reach 19 under.

The Australian replied: ‘I am going to guess two, two can of beer. To which the reported asked: ‘How many more will you have after that.
‘I’ll probably have about 20 Claret Jugs,’ Smith added.
‘To be honest, I’m really tired. It’s been a long week, so I’d be surprised if I make it past 10 or 11 tonight.’
Fans even took to social media to hail the mulleted Aussie as their ‘new favourite golfer’ after his superb display on the final day at St Andrews.

‘To win an Open Championship in itself is probably going to be a golfer’s highlight in their career. To do it around St Andrews, I think is just unbelievable.
‘This place is so cool. I love the golf course. I love the town. Yeah, hopefully we can keep that trend going with the every 50 years. That would be nice, wouldn’t it?’
Smith also revealed that none of his family have travelled the 12,000 miles from Down Under to cheer him on.
He said: ‘My dad was actually meant to come over, and he pulled out at the last minute. It was the thought of doing all that travel for one week basically.
‘He’s definitely kicking himself now. I really wish he was here too. It would have been such a cool week, even without this, to be at the home of golf. Dad loves his golf as well. It would have been awesome.’
