Islam Makhachev has vowed to ‘retire’ Tony Ferguson after the Dagestani extended his unbeaten run to seven fights following a dominant victory over Drew Dober at UFC 259.

Makhachev has been touted as the future of the 155-pound division, with team-mate Khabib Nurmagomedov insisting that the 29-year-old will ensure that UFC gold remains in Dagestan.

And Makhachev did not allow the increased attention to distract from the task at hand in Las Vegas, with his relentless wrestling forcing Dober to tap out in the third round.

The 29-year-old dominated once more as he extended his unbeaten run to seven victories

Nurmagomedov has tipped Makhachev to earn a title bout by the end of the year, and the 29-year-old urged UFC chiefs to pair him with a top five contender for his next bout, with former interim champion Ferguson his desired opponent.

‘My dream fight is Tony Ferguson,’ he said in the octagon following his win. ‘That’s my dream fight.

‘I just want to make him retire. He talks too much. Khabib is retired, now he keeps pressuring him, for what? I’m here, I have a seven-fight win streak, make this happen.

Former interim lightweight champion Ferguson is a big name and would be a huge scalp

‘My team have a very long situation with him, that is why I want to make him shut up and smash him,’ he added to ESPN.

Ferguson and Nurmagomedov have a lot of history. The pair have been scheduled to meet no fewer than five times throughout their respective careers, only for injuries, and latterly the coronavirus pandemic, to cause the fight to break down.

Having suffered defeats to Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira, El Cucuy is no longer the fearsome fighter that enjoyed a 12-fight unbeaten run. However, he remains a major scalp for up and coming fighters.

It is personal for Makhachev, with El Cucuy an arch rival of team-mate Khabib Nurmagomedov

Makhachev added that he does not allow the pressure of fulfilling Nurmagomedov’s prediction to alter his focus on the task at hand.

‘2020 was a crazy year, all my fights got cancelled. That’s why I’m very happy to be here now and get the finish. I’m very happy.

‘The finish is always very important. Maybe Dana will give me the bonus… I tried to finish him in the first round, but Dober is a very strong guy.

‘He has like crazy power, that’s why I just tried to make him tired, make him work and finish him in the third round.

‘I feel this pressure but I’m not an amateur guy. I have a big amateur career, now I have 19 victories, that’s why I understand everything. I just have to train hard because people believe in me.

‘2021 I have to fight two more times and in the beginning of 2022, I have to fight for the title.’
