Tragic TikTok video shows young boxer before and after punches left him in coma

Fans have been left shocked after a TikTok video emerged of a young boxer who suffered a devastating coma as a result of blows to the head.

Prichard Colon, aged 23, suffered a lengthy coma following a super welterweight boxing match in October 2015 against Terrel Williams.

Williams had punched the back of Colon’s head repeatedly throughout the contest which the referee failed to keep on top of, before knocking Colon down for the first time in his career in the ninth round.

He was cleared to carry on by the ringside doctor despite being dizzy and incoherent, and was then taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with brain bleeding.

Colon spent 221 days in a coma and reportedly remained in a vegetative state until 2017.

The Puerto Rican had been a promising 16-0 prospect with 13 knock-outs to his name prior to the tragic incident.

He is now 29 and a resurfaced video of him on TikTok has left fans devastated at the change in his health.

Users posted clips of the former boxer before and after the incident with captions such as: “Hope you get well one day Prichard.”

Colon, under the care of his mother Nieves Melende, was reported by The Washington Post in 2019 to be receiving physical occupational therapy in Florida.

Despite doctors initially fearing a permanent unresponsive state, Colon can communicate with his eyes using an augmentative and alternative communication device which enables him to answer yes or no questions.

He is also able to stand unsupported for short periods, though he had to undergo surgery on his skull as recently as this year.

Following the operation, his mother told Boxing Insider: “Everything went well. Thank you all for keeping my son in prayers, for the huge messages and calls inquiring about us.”
