‘I didn’t call for this fight’: Nate Diaz blasts UFC for matching him up with Khamzat Chimaev and insists he is doing them a favour by stepping into the Octagon with undefeated welterweight

  • Nate Diaz, 37, said he never asked to fight undefeated star Khamzat Chimaev
  • He said he had no interest in facing the Swedish welterweight in UFC 279
  • But Diaz said he would fight anyone and insisted the pressure was on Chimaev
  • Diaz has not fought since losing to Leon Edwards at UFC 263 over a year ago

Nate Diaz says he never asked to fight Khamzat Chimaev and insists he has no interest in facing the Swedish welterweight in the main event of UFC 279.

Diaz will go head-to-head with Chimaev on September 10 in Las Vegas before he retires from the production for good following the expiration of his contract.

Diaz – who is nine years older than Chimaev – insists the pressure is on the undefeated star and insists he is doing UFC a favour by taking the fight.

Speaking to ESPN, Diaz said: ‘They’re acting like I called for this fight, which I didn’t call for and don’t want and didn’t want and still don’t want it.

‘But I don’t give a f***, I’ll fight anybody. But, [the] pressure is on him, he better finish me, because he’s the next killer in town.

‘This fight isn’t even about this guy… it’s about ‘making’ this guy. And I’m like, ‘OK, you guys aren’t going to let me go? Because I’m the best fighter here? And you’re not gonna let me go unless it’s off of somebody? I gotta make somebody for you? Well, alright, you’re welcome. Let’s make you.

‘You’re welcome, UFC…’

Diaz hasn’t fought since he lost to Leon Edwards (L) at UFC 263 more than a year ago

The 37-year-old will compete the final fight of his UFC deal against Chimaev of Russia

Many fans believe the UFC have deliberately matched Diaz with undefeated Chimaev as a result of his ongoing dispute with Dana White.

The 37-year-old fighter called out White for ‘holding him hostage’ after announcing his desire to retire from the production.

Diaz said White was refusing to arrange the final fight of his deal to prevent him from leaving UFC.

The pair exchange several hostile messages on social media before it was announced Diaz would face undefeated Chimaev.

Many fans felt the match-up was unfair considering Diaz has not fought since losing a unanimous decision to Leon Edwards at UFC 263 over a year ago.

However, they have praised the 37-year-old for agreeing to step into the Octagon to face rising star, Chimaev.
