Lomachenko unhappy with 119-109 scorecard in loss to Lopez

‘I want to go home and review the fight’: Vasyl Lomachenko unhappy with 119-109 scorecard in loss to Teofimo Lopez as boxing promoter Bob Arum says he ‘doesn’t want to see’ one of the judges again

  • Teofimo Lopez took a stunning unanimous victory over Vasyl Lomachenko
  • The bout was officially scored 116-112, 117-111 and surprisingly 119-109
  • Lomachenko was unhappy with the scorecards in his defeat to Lopez

Vasyl Lomachenko has insisted he did not agree with the wide scorecards in his stunning loss against Teofimo Lopez while his promoter Bob Arum was so angry with them he said he ‘doesn’t want to see one of the judges ever again’.

The 23-year-old Lopez shocked the boxing world as he dominated early and finished strong to win an unanimous 12-round decision to unify the lightweight titles on Saturday night.

Many felt Lopez had won the fight but were left stunned by the scoring on Julie Lederman’s card, which only gave Lomachenko just one round in the whole fight while the other two judges scored the fight much closer with verdicts of 116-112 and 117-111.

And Lomachenko and Top Rank CEO Arum were quick to criticise the scoring on Lederman’s card.

After the fight, the Ukrainian said: ‘I think in the first half he had more rounds than I did, but in the second half I took over and I was much better.

‘I want to go home and review the fight, I can’t comment right now much about it. Definitely I’m not agreeing with the scorecards.’

Arum added: ‘Lopez won, 7-5 is the way I scored it. I can see 8-4, that’s a possibility.

‘But you can’t score it 11 rounds to 1 and say you watched the fight. Ninth, 10th and 11th weren’t close.

‘I would advise any fighter that I have to ask for the commission not to appoint Julie Lederman.’

On social media, there was also some shock to the 119-109 scorecard.

WBO Welterweight champion Terence Crawford tweeted: ‘119-109 ooowwweeee that was a good fight but that score was do disrespectful.’

Retired Welsh boxer Enzo Maccarinelli posted: ‘I had Lopez 1 up, a draw I wouldn’t have complained but 119-109,’ next to a facepalm emoji.

WBO junior lightweight champion Jamal Herring also disagreed with the scorecard tweeting: ‘I felt Teofimo pulled it off due to his performance in the LAST round, but I don’t agree with that 119-109 score. That judge had it as a complete blow out…’
