YouTuber Logan Paul ignored advice to not kick a person while they’re down after delivering a crushing verdict on Conor McGregor’s fall from greatness following his UFC 264 loss to Dustin Poirier.
Saturday’s main event ended in shocking fashion after McGregor, 32, appeared to step back and break his ankle in the closing seconds of the opening round.
Social media star-turned-boxer Jake Paulwas in attendance at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, where he continued to taunt his would-be opponent, whom he’s been calling out for some time.
The former Disney actor flaunted his new $100,000 ‘Sleepy McGregor’ chain in Nevada, a custom necklace depicting the Irishman after his first stoppage loss to Poirier at UFC 257 in January.
That was the first knockout defeat ‘The Notorious’ had suffered in his career to date, but Poirier has now picked up successive TKO victories against the former dual-weight champion.
The elder Paul brother, Logan, was almost sympathetic in his response to Saturday’s result, though the patronising tone shone through:
Paul—who boxed eight rounds against Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a June exhibition—tweeted: “damn. crazy to see a star with such a meteoric rise literally plummet into the ground just a few years later. It’s sad tbh. RIP Conor McGregor’s career.”
The Irishman appeared to suffer the ankle break free of any pressure from his foe, though Poirier later said he felt the moment McGregor’s leg cracked just 20 seconds into the fight.
Questions may be asked of where the Dublin native goes next in his career, although UFC president Dana White suggested there will be a fourth showdown against Poirier.
“The fight didn’t get finished,” he told reporters at UFC 264’s post-fight press conference.
Who would win if Conor McGregor met Jake Paul in a boxing match? Let us know in the comments section.
“You can’t have a fight finish that way. We’ll see how this whole thing plays out.
"Who knows how long Conor’s out, so Poirier will do his thing until Conor’s ready.”
Jake Paul has been busy at work goading McGregor over social media, hoping to entice the former UFC featherweight and lightweight titleholder into a lucrative boxing match.
While showing off his new ‘Sleepy McGregor’ necklace, Paul said in a recent video: "McGregor, you better win tonight (Saturday) – otherwise we're not going to be able to fight. If you lose, your career is over and that $50million offer I gave you won't be on the table anymore.
"Don't go sleepy sleepy. Goodnight McGregor. F*** you, b****.”
While The Notorious has suffered three losses in his last four MMA fights, Paul has won three pro boxing bouts in as many outings.
The 24-year-old knocked out Ben Askren in April and is scheduled to face another UFC alumnus, Tyron Woodley, in his latest money-spinning venture on August 28.
The younger Paul sibling has highlighted why he fancies himself to do well against UFC superstar McGregor: "You can tell Conor has lost it.
"He no longer speaks from a place of authenticity and you can tell he's trying to convince himself of his own lies.
"When we fight I will further expose him for the fraud he is."
