Legendary boxing promoter Frank Warren feels a potential showdown between newly crowned heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua would be England’s biggest sporting event since the 1966 World Cup final.

The boxing world is now desperate for Fury to face long time rival Joshua in a battle-of-Britain showdown, with every single heavyweight title belt up for grabs.

Several obstacles stand in the way of a summer showdown, including mandatory challengers and Deontay Wilder’s re-match clause, though Warren believes the scale of the potential fight will be seismic.

Warren made the huge claim that the fight would be on the scale of the 1966 World Cup final

‘That would be the biggest sporting event to take place in the UK since England won the World Cup. You would not be able to get a ticket for it,’ Warren told the Sun following Fury’s Las Vegas triumph.

‘The stumbling block is that he [Joshua] has to fight Pulev. The stumbling block for that fight is the old Waterford Crystal (points to chin) and we will see what happens with that. If anyone clips him he will go.

‘If I was him I wouldn’t fight Pulev, I would even vacate the belts to get the fight with Tyson on.

‘He should not take the risk. I’d prefer him not to take the risk, I’d prefer Wilder not to take the rematch and let’s get it on.’

Joshua holds the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles, meaning a clash with Fury would place all heavyweight belts in existence on the line.

His promoter Eddie Hearn said on TalkSport following the Fury victory: ‘What a time for British boxing. To have one world heavyweight champion would be great but to have two with all the belts, we will never see it again.

‘I have said and I will make this clear, we have to make this fight happen. We will never get the chance for two Brits to fight for an undisputed heavyweight world championship.

‘I will promise you we will do everything we can to make this fight happen.’
