Fans mock battered Wilder after second straight defeat by Fury

‘Good luck trying to get into your phone tonight!’: Fans mock battered Deontay Wilder after he fails to win back WBC title from Tyson Fury in 11th-round knockout

  • Tyson Fury retained his WBC title by knocking out Deontay Wilder in Las Vegas
  • The Gypsy King was knocked down twice himself by the Bronze Bomber
  • But he rose to the challenge and defended his crown at the T-Mobile Arena
  • The American however has been taken to hospital following his defeat by Fury

Boxing fans have taken to social media to mock Deontay Wilder following Tyson Fury’s vicious WBC title-defending victory against him through memes.

The Gypsy King retained his crown 20 months on from winning it with a knockout in the 11th round of the trilogy fight between the duo in Las Vegas.

Although Fury was knocked down twice by Wilder in the fourth round and was losing halfway through on the scorecards, the former came through to declare himself once more the ‘greatest heavyweight in the world.’

That came at the expense of Wilder, who was also knocked to the canvas in the third round and in the 10th round before he was knocked out.

And Twitter users have subsequently mocked the Bronze Bomber, who has gone to hospital for tests following a second straight vicious defeat by Fury.

One wrote: ‘Good luck trying to get into your phone tonight’, accompanied by a photo that appeared to be from Fury’s victory in February 2020 and a message from an iPhone Face ID message that showed the face not being identified.

But others jumped on Wilder’s case using memes from the hit Netflix series Squid Game, which shows one of the contestants in the show saying: ‘I’m good at everything, except for the things I’m not,’ with the captions of Wilder before and after the fight.

Meanwhile, another user had Wilder being held from falling to the ground by one of the characters in the series – Ali – during the first challenge, which has become a meme used in a variety of different ways.

However, there were other memes posted that related back to the world of boxing and MMA.

One showed Wilder laying down on a sofa instead of the canvas as he was against Fury along with Conor McGregor, with the image of the ‘The Notorious’ taken from his stopped fight against Dustin Poirier in July.

Other users also went for similar memes of Wilder laying down on home furniture, with one superimposing the image of him lying almost prostrate on the ground on top of a bed, while another photoshopped a night cap on top of his head.

But Wilder, who was left with blood coming out of his mouth following Fury’s repeated powerful shots, was very much awake after his fight had ended and has now gone to University Medical Center to undergo precautionary checks following his brutal defeat.

Speaking for the first time since his defeat in the trilogy, Wilder said: ‘I did my best, but it wasn’t good enough tonight,’ he said. ‘I’m not sure what happened.

‘I know that in training he did certain things, and I also knew that he didn’t come in at 277 pounds to be a ballet dancer.

‘He came to lean on me, try to rough me up and he succeeded.’

Fury meanwhile accused the Bronze Bomber of lacking respect, saying: ‘I said ‘well done, mate’ and he said ‘I don’t want to show any sportsmanship or respect.’ I said ‘No problem.’ I was very surprised. Sore loser. Idiot.’

‘I’m a sportsman,’ Fury added in an interview on BT Sport. ‘I went over to (Wilder to) show some love and respect and he didn’t want to show it back. So I pray for him.’

Fury declared himself the ‘best heavyweight fighter in the world’ after defending his crown

Speaking from the ring on how the fight developed, Fury added: ‘I was down a couple of times, I was hurt, Wilder is a strong puncher.

‘It was a great fight tonight. I will not make any excuses, Wilder is a top fighter, he gave me a run for my money. I always say I am the best fighter in the world and he is the second best.

‘Don’t ever doubt me. When the chips are down I can always deliver.’
