Boxing icon Mike Tyson honoured with 10ft statue but fans left baffled by design

Mike Tyson has been honoured with a statue outside the Mulberry Street Pizzeria in Las Vegas.

The statue was erected by Resorts World President Scott Sibella and restaurateur Richie Palmer as a tribute to his close friend.

However, fans are not very impressed with the design and do not believe it looks anything like the former heavyweight boxing champion.

Twitter user @jamescoogan wrote: “Remove the tattoo and I’d have had no idea that it was supposed to be Mike.”

@erraticspace wrote: “That's a shame, I wouldn't have been able to guess it was him from looking I'm just being honest.”

While @5and20to5 simply posted: “Looks nothing like him.”

Palmer, owner and founder of Mulberry Street Pizzeria, said: "It's important because we've been friends for 35 years. It was my way to honour him and have a tribute to him because people don't know what a great, great, great human being he is.

"Generous to a fault. Kind. He will never say no to anyone for a picture. People don't get that. All they see is the ferociousness, the craziness, the bad moments.

"They don't see what a genuinely wonderful person he is."

Tyson was truly overwhelmed with the honour and was unaware this last week marked 35 years since he became the youngest world champion in history.

He stated: "I had no idea… I am very humbled right now. I am truly grateful.

"To be honest I don't remember that night and most of my boxing career is a blur. And so I live this life now."
