Anderson Silva’s message to Chris Weidman eight years on from identical injury

Anderson Silva has sent a message to Chris Weidman after Weidman suffered a broken leg at UFC 261.

Weidman will undergo surgery after breaking his leg in the opening seconds of his bout with Uriah Hall.

Attempting to throw the first strike of the bout, Weidman’s leg snapped and he crumpled back with the fight immediately called off.

It brought back memories for many of an injury Silva suffered eight years ago when taking on Weidman at UFC 168.

And the Spider offered his best wishes to Weidman following the horror injury as he sent a heartwarming message on social media.

Silva wrote: “My deepest and most sincere sentiments champ. Have faith, I wish you a speedy recovery. In this moment I wish you and your family light, love and knowledge.

“To the fans of the sport, please respect this moment of this incredible warrior and let’s wish that he is 100 per cent very recovered soon. May God bless you and your family @chrisweidman.”

Silva had to spend a year recovering from the horrendous injury and went on to lose five of his six Octagon outings thereafter.

There were understandably plenty of well-wishers following Weidman’s injury with UFC president Dana White not wanting to divulge further.

Though his opponent Hall said: “I’ve got nothing but respect for Chris Weidman.

“He’s truly one of the best. It is a crazy story that he was the first man I fought that defeated me, that introduced me to fear.

“I wanted to put on a great performance. I feel so bad for him. I hope he’s OK. I wish the family well. It’s the sucky part of this sport. I hope he recovers.”
